First Time in Dubai: Practical Tips for Getting Around

Climate, etiquette, neighbourhoods and transport: what first-time visitors find useful to know.

Plan around the climate

From roughly November to March, the weather is warm and pleasant. From May to September, daytime heat is intense, so plan outdoor sightseeing for early mornings and evenings and spend the middle of the day indoors.

Understand the city’s shape

Dubai stretches along the coast. Historic Deira and Bur Dubai lie near the airport; Downtown Dubai and Business Bay form the centre; Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina line the coast to the south-west. Grouping sights by area saves hours.

Getting around

  • The metro is efficient along its lines but does not reach every attraction
  • Taxis and ride-hailing are good for short trips
  • A chauffeur suits days with several stops or families with children
  • Walking between attractions is often impractical in summer

Respectful etiquette

Dubai is welcoming and cosmopolitan. Dress modestly in malls, souks and religious sites, avoid public displays of affection and be considerate when photographing people. During Ramadan, check current guidance on eating and drinking in public during daylight hours.

A simple first-day plan

Start in old Dubai in the morning, head to Downtown for lunch and Burj Khalifa, then finish at the coast for sunset. A private city tour makes this easy to do in one relaxed day.
